Do apartment complexes call employers?

So I found a new apartment that I would like to move in to. I'm a student, and my mom is going to be my co-signer. I just need to turn in the applications to have them check our criminal history, etc. I'm just wondering, in general, if they (apartments managers, leasing consultants, whoever) call your employer or your co-signer's employer? I hope that makes sense!
